Artist Statement

2025

I would describe my work as introspection through a scientific lens. Though science and art are typically held at opposite ends of a spectrum, I enjoy exploring the intersectionality between scientific and artistic processes to portray the human themes prevalent in my life. To me, the objective and observational world of science helps me approach intangible topics, such as identity, isolation, and nostalgia, and transform my feelings into concrete subject matter.

While my earlier work conveys human themes through explicit scientific imagery and markmaking styles depicting cells and laboratory equipment, I have gravitated towards using my experimental creative process and scientific methodology as the art form itself. As such, I have grown fond of using chemical reactions in my process, approaching each piece as a challenge to discover how I can apply my past knowledge of scientific concepts to bring my visions into fruition.

Through my work, my hope is to reflect my sentiments in a way that sparks both curiosity and connection. I want viewers to enjoy piecing together elements of my work, especially since my art is both figurative in subject matter and abstracted through pattern, scale, and the natural imperfections of chemically-rendered images. Most importantly, I want my art to feel relatable. As I grapple with the bittersweet inability to return to the past by incorporating irreversible chemical changes (bleaching, rusting, solar dye printing) into my process, I explore personal memories while acknowledging that sentimentality is a universal feeling.
